Honey Protected Kidneys and Livers From a Common Drug's Harm In Rats

Gentamicin is a common antibiotic used against serious bacterial infections, but it carries a well known cost. Even at standard doses, it can quietly injure the kidneys and liver while it clears an infection elsewhere in the body.

A preliminary study in rats found that honey, given daily by mouth alongside ten days of gentamicin injections, prevented much of the kidney and liver damage the drug typically causes. Rats that received both honey and gentamicin showed far smaller changes in blood markers of kidney and liver function than rats given gentamicin alone, and their tissue level antioxidant activity stayed close to normal.

Researchers in Morocco divided forty two rats into seven groups of six, comparing honey alone, gentamicin alone, honey combined with gentamicin, and untreated controls. After ten days, they measured standard blood markers of kidney and liver stress, alongside antioxidant enzyme activity and a marker of cell damage called MDA, directly in kidney and liver tissue. Rats treated with gentamicin alone showed sharp increases in blood urea, creatinine and liver enzymes, all signs of organ strain. Rats that also received honey showed substantially smaller increases across every one of these markers.

The honey used in the study was analyzed for its own chemical makeup. It contained six identified phenolic compounds, with gallic acid the most abundant, followed by ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, cinnamic acid and vanillic acid. Gentamicin's damage to the kidney and liver is thought to work partly through oxidative stress, an overload of unstable molecules that harms cells faster than the body can repair them. In the honey treated rats, antioxidant enzymes in both organs stayed closer to normal levels, and the cell damage marker MDA rose far less than in the untreated gentamicin group. That pattern lines up with the idea that honey's phenolic compounds were doing real, measurable work inside the animals, not just showing antioxidant activity in a lab dish.

The study has real limits. It was conducted in rats, not people, and a protective effect at a given oral dose in a one hundred sixty gram rat does not simply scale up to a human dose. No clinical trial has tested whether honey protects human kidneys or livers during antibiotic treatment.
