A Study of 834 Adults Finds Honey Eased Coughs Within Five Days

In a health district in southern Morocco, hundreds of adults fighting off coughs and colds took the same prescribed medicine, but only some of them also reached for a spoonful of honey.

A prospective observational study of 834 adults with acute respiratory infections in Morocco's Guelmim region found that those who added honey to their standard treatment reported milder coughs and lower overall symptom scores by the fifth day of illness than those who stuck to medicine alone. Because patients decided for themselves whether to use honey rather than being randomly assigned, the comparison reflects how people already behave rather than a controlled experiment.

Researchers recruited patients at health centers and a regional hospital in Guelmim between late 2022 and mid 2023, splitting them into a honey group and a reference group of 417 people each. Everyone received the same drug treatment, and the honey group simply chose to add honey on their own. Both groups filled out a detailed questionnaire on cough, sleep and general symptoms on their first day of illness and again five days later.

By day five, the honey group's average overall symptom score had dropped to about twenty, compared with roughly twenty three in the reference group, and their average cough severity score was lower as well. Patients who used honey also needed fewer follow up visits for respiratory symptoms over the course of their illness. Differences in sleep quality and in how often patients coughed during the day or night leaned in honey's favor too, but did not reach statistical significance in this dataset.

The finding adds to a body of honey and cough research that has focused mostly on children, leaving adults comparatively understudied. Honey's antibacterial, antiviral and anti inflammatory properties are often proposed as part of the explanation, along with the simple observation that sweetness itself seems to dampen the urge to cough, though this study did not test either mechanism directly.

Because the honey and reference groups were not randomly assigned, people who chose to try honey may have differed from those who did not in ways the researchers could not fully measure. Several other outcomes reported here, including sleep quality and cough frequency, trended in the same direction but did not reach statistical significance. It is also worth remembering that respiratory infections often improve on their own with time and rest, honey or not.
