A Review of Honey Studies Finds It Cuts Cough Severity by 44 Percent

Twenty three separate clinical studies, four medical databases, and one recurring question: does honey actually do anything for a cough, or is it just a comforting spoonful of tradition.

A systematic review pooling data from those twenty three studies found that honey reduced cough severity by 44 percent and cough frequency by 36 percent compared with conventional treatments in people with acute respiratory infections. The review, covering more than 2,300 patients across randomized trials and observational studies, also reported that honey taken alongside standard treatment improved measures of lung function in asthma patients and eased coughing in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The researchers searched PubMed, Medline, Scopus, ScopeMed, and Google Scholar for studies published mostly within the last ten years, then sorted the results into two groups. Thirteen trials were randomized controlled studies, four were non randomized, and six were observational. Some compared honey against a placebo, others against cough medicines such as dextromethorphan, and others against usual care alone, so the review had to weigh results from quite different kinds of comparisons rather than a single uniform trial design.

Honey's reputation as a remedy for coughs and sore throats goes back millennia, and the World Health Organization already lists it as a possible adjunct for cough relief. What this review adds is a broader picture across dozens of trials rather than one isolated result, and researchers pointed to honey's natural antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties, including its capacity to produce hydrogen peroxide, as a plausible explanation for the pattern researchers kept seeing. For a food that has sat in kitchens and medicine cabinets since antiquity, having that many independent trials point in a broadly similar direction is notable in itself.

The review's own authors were careful not to overstate their case. Several comparisons showed substantial inconsistency between studies, with one statistical measure of variation reaching as high as 91 percent in places, meaning the size of honey's effect differed a great deal depending on which trial you looked at. Honey types, doses, and administration methods varied widely across the studies too, and the authors called for larger, more standardized trials before firmer conclusions can be drawn, particularly in adults.

Even with those caveats, the consistency of direction across so many independent research groups is what makes this review worth noting. It is the kind of accumulated evidence that rewards buying honey from a source that can actually verify what is in the jar.
