A Review of 69 Trials Finds a Sweet Spot Honey Dose of 10 Grams a Day

Ten grams of honey a day, about half a tablespoon, was the amount linked to the best result for long term blood sugar control in a new pooled review of clinical trials. Once daily intake climbed well past that amount, several other health markers started moving in the opposite direction.

A large scale analysis pooled data from 69 randomized controlled trials involving 3544 participants to compare how honey, royal jelly, and propolis affect heart and metabolic health. For honey specifically, drawn from 16 studies covering more than 900 people, researchers found that a small daily amount was tied to a meaningful drop in hemoglobin A1c, a standard marker of average blood sugar over time, while the researchers concluded that honey use overall, particularly at higher doses or over longer periods, was linked to increases in systolic blood pressure, the liver enzyme AST, triglycerides, fasting blood sugar, and high sensitivity CRP, a marker of inflammation.

The team used statistical modeling to map how each effect changed as the daily dose rose, then rated the certainty of every finding using the GRADE system, the same framework used to weigh evidence for clinical guidelines. Blood pressure rose in a straight line with honey intake, climbing by roughly two millimeters of mercury for each tablespoon consumed daily. AST followed a different shape entirely, rising sharply around a dose of 25 grams a day before declining at higher amounts.

The pattern reflects something nutrition researchers see again and again: a food's effect can flip direction with quantity. Honey is mostly fructose and glucose, and at a small daily amount its other properties appear to outweigh that sugar load, while at larger amounts the sugar itself starts to dominate the outcome. It is a useful counterpoint to the idea that more of a beneficial food is always better.

A few caveats matter here. The benefit on HbA1c was driven mainly by a single trial, and the effect disappeared when that trial was excluded from the analysis. Certainty for most of honey's individual effects was rated low or very low, and the honey used across these trials varied widely in type and processing, with no single floral source examined.
